Local Bookshops

Waterstones

Ealing Broadway Centre, 64 The Broadway, London W5 5JY, UK – 020 8840 5905

I don't buy books from shops anymore, I use Amazon all the time. But I still like to walk into the dear old Waterstones once in a while. This Branch is rather small and the assortment is limited, for my taste, but it's nice and tidy. If one thing is to be said it's not being able to find a member of Staff easily: they are always stuck behind the cash desk and I rarely seen someone on the shop floor. Then again, the signage is good enough so that you can browse around independently, unless you are looking for something in particular.

Above-average sized bookstore, spread over the ground floor and basement with an eclectic mix of fiction and non fiction. Popular adult and childrens titles are kept in stock with much more available to order in via the phone or in person. The store is located in the heart of the Ealing broadway shopping centre and there is little or no free parking anywhere nearby during peak hours weekdays and weekends. Staff are friendly and helpful and a loyalty card scheme ensures every £10 spent in the store accumulates stamps which can be redeemed against subsequent purchases. On the negative side, some of the copies for sale are a little dog-earred where they have been rummaged through by casual shoppers but overall the best place to find books (outside a library) within the borough.

The Pitshanger Bookshop

141 Pitshanger Ln, London W5 1RH, UK – 020 8991 8131

Knowledgeable, helpful, and can order books for next day. Also sell excellent cards, games and other literary accessories.

This is an excellent bookshop on Pitshanger Lane, even if just to browse. The selection of books (including children's books) has clearly been made with great care. The members of staff who work there are very helpful and friendly to chat to, and always ready to give recommendations if you ask them to based on other things that you have read. I have used Amazon in the past but have discovered that often there isn't as much of a tailor-made selection, and the value of picking up something hand-picked in a charming modern bookshop like this from real people cannot be underestimated. I have also used Pitshanger Bookshop to help me track down a hard-to-find US edition of a book. They also have great bargains when they change their stock, the likes of which cannot be obtained online. Also check out their events with local authors. Highly recommended.

Lovely, perfectly packed secondhand bookshop. Full of treats, quiet and relatively easy navigate. Great range of cards too. Heartily recommended.
